Background and Development:

Shankhamul Park, located in the Shankhamul Ghat area along the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, is a significant project initiated by the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA). The project aimed to restore urban greenery and enhance the quality of life for residents by providing a peaceful recreational environment amidst the city’s hustle and bustle. The association has constructed a park utilizing funds raised from Nepalis residing in various countries around the world. The park features the plantation of important trees such as Banyan, Peepal, and Rudraksha, along with a variety of flower species. Additionally, the park includes modern amenities, such as designated areas for children’s recreation, sheltered spots for protection during rain, and comfortable seating arrangements.

Launch of the Project

The development of Shankhamul Park was part of NRNA’s broader initiative to create urban green spaces that promote environmental sustainability and community well-being. NRNA collaborated with Lalitpur Metropolitan city to ensure the successful completion of the park, symbolizing their commitment to improving urban infrastructure for public benefit.

Features of Shankhamul Park

  • Landscaping and Design: The Park boasts beautifully landscaped gardens, walking paths, and numerous benches, offering residents a space for relaxation, exercise, and social engagement. The careful attention to design has made the park a favorite spot for morning walkers and fitness enthusiasts.
  • Symbolic Statue: At the heart of the park is a statue of a conch shell (Shankha), which represents the park’s name and reflects the cultural heritage of the area. This unique feature serves as a cultural landmark within the park.
  • Community Space: Since its opening, Shankhamul Park has become a popular destination for families and individuals seeking a peaceful retreat. Its community-focused design fosters social interaction and provides an oasis of calm in the busy city.

Funding and Support:

The total cost of the Shankhamul Park development was approximately NPR Three crore 2 lakhs 60 thousand (30,260,000). The substantial investment reflects the NRNA’s dedication to promoting sustainable urban development. NRNA, along with Lalitpur Metropolitan city, played a pivotal role in mobilizing resources and overseeing the park’s creation, underscoring their commitment to enhancing the community’s quality of life through environmentally conscious projects.

Completion and Handover:

Shankhamul Park was successfully completed and formally handed over to Lalitpur Metropolitan city on June 07, 2018. The handover ceremony marked the culmination of efforts by NRNA and other contributors to transform a previously overlooked area into a thriving green space. Shankhamul Park embraces diversity, welcoming people of all ages and interests. The park reverberates with the laughter of young ones, while elderly visitors find comfort in the natural surroundings.
