Introduction
Following the catastrophic earthquake on April 25, 2015, which devastated many regions of Nepal, the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) recognized the urgent need for intervention in the severely impacted area of Laprak in Dharche Rural Municipality Ward No-4, Gorkha. The village, located merely 13 kilometers from the earthquake’s epicenter Barpark, was almost completely destroyed, leaving thousands homeless and in dire need of support.

Project Genesis
The inception of the Laprak Model Settlement Project was marked by a significant ceremony on 24th April, 2016, where Right Honorable President of Nepal Mrs. Bidya Devi Bhandari inaugurated the project while on 7th October 2016 Right Honorable Prime Minister of Nepal Mr. Puspa Kamal Dahal laid the foundation stone. This initiative was a result of a collaborative agreement between the Ministry of Urban Development, the National Reconstruction Authority, and NRNA. The project aimed to rebuild not just homes but also to restore the community spirit and resilience of the Laprak villagers.
Construction and Features
The new settlement site at Gupsipakha (20 km away from Barpark) was chosen with consideration for geological stability and accessibility. Covering an area designated by the Government of Nepal, the project involved the construction of 573 earthquake-resistant houses designed to provide a safe, permanent environment for the displaced families. Each house was constructed using locally sourced materials and incorporating traditional Nepali architectural elements, blending modern engineering with cultural aesthetics.
Sustainability and Community Development
In addition to housing, the project focused on sustainable development, including the establishment of community centers, schools, and healthcare facilities to ensure a holistic rehabilitation of the affected population. Infrastructure development such as roads, water supply, and sanitation facilities were also integral parts of the project, aimed at improving the overall quality of life and ensuring long-term sustainability of the settlement. Those amentities were built by support of Government of Nepal, different INGOs and NGOs.

Completion and Handover
The project culminated in a formal handover ceremony on April 22, 2021, where leaders from NRNA and the National Reconstruction Authority presented the new homes and land ownership documents to the families. This event not only marked the completion of the physical structures but also symbolized the restoration of hope and stability to the Laprak community.

Project Impact and Legacy
The total investment of approximately NPR 576.6 million underscored the commitment of the Nepali diaspora to contribute to Nepal’s recovery and development. The project has been recognized as a model for disaster recovery and resettlement, illustrating the effective collaboration between non-governmental organizations, the government, and the international Nepali community.
